About Jersey Doodles

Meet the Doodle's parents
excerpted from Dogbreedinfo.com

Golden Retriever A beautiful, elegant dog with a feathered coat that is medium long and cream to golden color. The outer part of the coat is water repellent and the undercoat is dense. The head is broad, with a tapered muzzle. The nose is black and the dark brown eyes are friendly and inviting. The ears are medium length and hang down straight. The Golden's neck and thighs are muscular and the chest is broad. The tail is long. A lovable, mannerly, intelligent dog. Goldens are easily trained, patient and gentle with children, loyal, confident, sweet and eager to please. They need to be around people to be happy.

Labrador Retriever.

A solid, muscular dog, with a short, straight, easy care, water resistant double coat that comes in solid black, yellow (or white), or chocolate. The Lab has a broad head, a thick nose, and a moderately wide muzzle. The eyes are chestnut or hazel with an intelligent inquisitive expression. The neck is muscular and powerful. The medium-sized ears are pendant. The Lab is loving, affectionate, patient, highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water. They are superb with children and other dogs. Labs are the most popular guide dog for the blind.

Standard Poodle. The Standard Poodle is an elegant, medium to large dog, with a profuse, wiry curly coat. The head and muzzle are long. The skull is a bit rounded. The ears are wide and hanging close to the head. The eyes are oval and generally very dark. The Standard Poodle has a delightful springy gait. Standard Poodles are proud, elegant, dignified, good-natured, happy, sensitive, highly intelligent and one of the most trainable breeds. The Standard Poodle tends to be a bit calmer than the smaller variety of Poodles. They need to be with people and dislike being alone. For the most part they are generally friendly toward strangers, and are excellent with children. The Standard Poodle is good with other dogs.

Meet the Labradoodle

The Doodle is an exciting  hybrid that is strong, athletic, intelligent, highly trainable, affectionate, with an even temperament, and is driven by an overriding desire to please. Doodles are terrific family dogs, great with children, and friendly to other dogs and people. They aren't couch potato's, but  with activities that enrich their body and mind, you will find them a companion well worth the work.

Media coverage has made the Doodle something of a star in the last few years. For example, the cover story of the 10/8/2004 LIFE magazine asked if the Doodle is "The Perfect Dog?", and on 9/29/2004 CBS broadcast a video about Doodles in the "Early Show" with Harry Smith featuring photos from Jersey Doodle! Doodles and Allergies

We have learned that there are no guarantees concerning the shedding and hypoallergenic properties of Doodles, especially within the initial generations. Therefore it is imperative that all pups are placed in homes where there are no allergy issues. If you or a family member has serious allergy issues, you may want to consider a higher generation Doodle,a Poodle or another non-shedding breed.

It is impossible to test your allergy response with our puppies or breeding dogs because dander is present everywhere. We do suggest that you meet as many Doodles as you can and we can direct you to Doodle Romps or prior owners who would just love to show off their dogs. Top

Generations

The offspring of a Poodle and another breed is called the First Generation, or F1. Julius, is our F1 American Retriever stud and when bred to one of our Poodle gals, will produce F1b puppies. Two of our gals are F1's and they will breed with our Poodle stud, Gus. The "b" in the F1b means the F1 was bred back to one of the initial breeds, in most cases, a Poodles. F1b's or a higher generation are recommended for those who may have mild allergies and will be able to tolerate an allergy response.

Coat Types

Doodles can have a wide variety of coats. Some may need little brushing and grooming, others may need almost daily care. Some may have the continuous hair growth typical of a Poodle (or human) so they will need cutting or trimming every 2-3 months.

There is even a difference between the puppy coat and the adult coat and the transition usually occurs from 8-12 months of age. Sometimes this transition is accompanied by moderate matting and will require a more attentive grooming regimen. Many owners have had great success cutting out matted hair, or just shaving their Doodle at this stage.

Hair Coat. This coat will usually be found on F1 Doodles. It may be short and wiry, or long and wispy, or it can be full and fluffy. Because an F1 is is a combination , with one parent a known shedder, there may be light to moderate shedding, although some may not shed at all. F1 litters are a mixed bag. Some may require heavy grooming as they mature, others may not. They are NOT recommended for severe allergy or asthma sufferers.

Fleece Coat. This coat will usually be found on multigenerational dogs that have had Doodle to Doodle breeding, although an F1B may sometime express this coat. When they mature they usually have a lose spiral curl that is nonshedding and high maintenance.

Wool /Curly Coat. May have tight curls like a Poodle and are also usually non-shedding and have high maintenance coats.

Other Descriptors. Some people describe Doodle coats with such colorful adjectives as fluffy, full coated, Retriever, Poodley, not Poodle-like, flat coated, wavy, Teddy bear, Terrier, and Benji. These descriptions enhance our communication, so that Jersey Doodles will be able to guide you to the right litter and pup for you needs. Top

Sizes & Weights:

Below is the general consensus of the size categories used to describe Doodles. As you can see, they overlap.

Standard. Minimum height at shoulder: 21"
Medium. Height at shoulder: 18-23"
Miniature. Maximum height at shoulder: 17-20"

We are only specializing in Standard size Doodles.

Weight: Doodles can take after either parent. A Standard, at 24" at the shoulder, can weigh 55 pounds and resemble a Poodle in body type, or it can weigh 75 pounds and resemble a Lab in body type. We cannot guarantee height or weight at maturity, although we can give a fair estimate. Top

Colors

Labradoodles and Goldendoodles can be bred for solid colors such as: Black, Silver (which is a black that will develop silver in its coat), Chalk (or White), Cream, Apricot (or Red), Chocolate, and Cafe au Lait (a Chocolate that will lighten or develop silver in its coat). Doodles can also be multi colored. Top

About Jersey Doodles

Jersey Doodles specializes in solid color F1 Goldendoodle and F1b Goldendoodle and North American Retrievers.

As responsible breeders, we are careful to ensure that our dogs are healthy and free from inherited diseases prior to breeding. We take extra measures to ensure and promote the health of our dogs by testing all of our breeding dogs' hips, via either OFA or PennHIP, and eye disorders via CERF exam. We also selectively screen for SA, vWD, Addisons, Thyroid, and Epilepsy. All our puppies have their health carefully monitored, are given preventative deworming, coccidia and giardia treatments, and are current on all their vaccinations when they go home with you.

All pups go home already microchipped. This remarkable computer chip has a unique identification number programmed into it. The device is small enough to fit inside a hypodermic needle and is simply injected under the skin where it will stay for the life of the animal. This provides a permanent, positive identification which cannot be lost, altered, or intentionally removed. If your dog is ever lost and found, the first thing any vet or shelter will do is scan the neck area for a microchip, and with the code they can easily locate the owner.

As you can see, the health of the puppies is of vital concern to us, therefore we are currently NOT accepting visits to our home until the puppies are 7 weeks or older. This is our new protocol, which we will not deviate from. We had lost a whole litter of 8 week old puppies to parvo due to a contaminated visitor interacting with our pups. Very likely it was brought into our space by a family shopping for pups...often prospective puppy owners will go from kennel to kennel or Pet shop before purchasing from us and will unknowingly carry the disease in on the bottom of their shoes or even on the tires of their cars. Here is a site from a Bulldog Breeder that explains inoculations and Parvo. It is also important to tell us if you have had a dog or puppy infected or die from Parvo within the last six months because it is possible to bring it here. Before you visit us, we ask that you do not go to Pet Stores, Vets, other breeders or any other place dogs conjugate. In caring for our dogs, our puppies and our home, I can only agree to appointments with people committed to buying a puppy at this time."

****Because we are uncomfortable taking deposits before the pups are born and instead like to wait a few weeks before we start placing them, we usually have pups over the age of 8 weeks who have not been allocated to families. Puppies are normally released between 8-10 weeks. At 7 weeks of age, if we have available pups, you are more than welcomed to make an appointment and if we are all comfortable with each other,we can processed with the adoption papers.

Both for sentimental reasons, and because we want to monitor the health of the dogs we produce. We ask to be notified of any and all health or behavioral issues you encounter, as well as the highlights and happiness. We love getting pictures.

Our Agreement of Sale covers your puppy for the first two years of their life against defects that your vet and ours believe will seriously affect the quality of your puppy's life. All our pups are sold with a "Spay/Neuter Contract." We feel very strongly about this. For more info about why you should spay or neuter your dog, click here.

If for any reason and at any time you decide you cannot to keep your Doodle, we ask that you contact us and we will either ask that you return the dog to us or we will assist you in finding it a new home. We do not want any of our dogs to ever end up in a shelter!

If you think you would like to bring a Doodle into your family please contact us.
